Oncofinder is currently in beta. This means the application is still under development, has not been fully tested, and may contain bugs, incomplete features, or inaccuracies. We are working hard to improve the app, and your experience as a beta user is critical to this process.

As a beta user, you may encounter issues during your use of Oncofinder, and we encourage you to provide feedback to help us refine and enhance the service.

The number of claims, publications, and other details presented are estimates based on publicly available data. Oncofinder does not verify or audit the information for accuracy beyond what is publicly accessible.

How To Use This App:

Enter your zip code, the distance, and cancer type. Then search.
Oncofinder will provide you a list of institutions that match your search criteria.
If you click on an institution or a pin on the map, Oncofinder will then show you a list of the oncologists at that institution that match your search criteria.
If an NCI Center is within the search radius you've specified, Oncofinder will show a green marker and highlight the NCI center in green on the list. It will not show how many oncologists, publications, or claims. The NCI-Designated Cancer Centers are recognized for their scientific leadership in laboratory and clinical research, in addition to serving their communities and the broader public by integrating training and education for biomedical researchers and health care professionals. You can verify whether an oncologist is board certified by clicking on the link labeled ‘Click to verify board certification’. Board certified doctors have had extra training in special areas, such as medical oncology (cancer care), hematology (diseases of the blood), or gynecologic surgery (female reproductive system). They have taken and passed certification tests approved by doctors in their field. To keep their certification, doctors must continue to keep up with advances and changes in their specialty area. Not all doctors who are specialists are board certified, and doctors don’t need to be board certified to be excellent caregivers. Still, many doctors become board certified in at least one specialty.
Prior to scheduling an appointment at any institution, you should call to check if your insurance covers the institution.

About the Information Presented:

The app searches for hematologists and medical oncologists who have a Medicare claim in 2021 associated with a drug that has been approved by the FDA for your selected cancer type. This ensures the physician has been practicing for the last few years. That said, this may mean that some physicians will not appear on this search who are newly practicing, in a field with many recently approved therapies, or do not treat many patients insured by Medicare.
The results also only show oncologists who can be found on the National Library of Medicine for your particular diagnosis. There are many excellent oncologists who would not have publications that fit the apps search criteria, but this strict criteria ensures the physicians presented have contributed to furthering research within your specific diagnosis.
The number of publications for each oncologist is the number of publications that can be found on the National Library of Medicine that match the oncologists name and selected cancer type. The number of ‘publications’ for each institution is the cumulative number of publications for all oncologists associated with the institution.
The number of oncologists is the number of oncologists whose address on file are associated with the institution’s address.
The number of claims for each oncologist is the number of Medicare claims filed in 2021 that match the oncologist’s name and are tied to a therapy that is approved for the selected cancer type. The number of ‘claims’ for each institution is the cumulative number of claims for all oncologists associated with the institution.

Why did I build this?

I’m just a guy who is trying to help. I've had family and friends impacted by cancer and they all have wondered if they are seeing the right oncologist. Therefore, I built an app to help you find a medical oncologist who is near you, has administered drugs approved for your cancer type, has published research related to your cancer type, and is board certified (remember you have to check by clicking on ‘Click to verify board certification’).

Bear with me

This app is built entirely on publicly available data and has no funding whatsoever apart from my time and the little bit I spend to keep the server running. So there might be some downtime and it might run slow at times. That said, my goal is to continuously improve the experience and support more diagnoses in the application, so if you have any feedback or want me to search for a diagnosis the app doesn't cover please send an email to oncologistfinder@gmail.com.
